Becoming - by Michelle Obama
The autobiographical memoir of the former United States First Lady
I wanted this book from the moment I first clapped eyes on it, and I was lucky enough to get it from Santa Claus for Christmas!
So what did I think after all the hype? I loved it! Though I have to admit, it was a long read - as a mum of 3 little ones I am perpetually knackered, and there were some nights I couldn't manage more than a few pages at a time without nodding off and dropping my book (most annoying).
There have been countless reviews of this book so I’m without a doubt duplicating what many have already said, so I’ll keep it short and sweet. I was instantly hooked, and I was fascinated to learn about Michelle’s childhood in a poverty stricken area in South Side Chicago - the way she was brought up and the morals and values her parents instilled in her and her brother (extremely inspiring), and how she worked so damn hard to achieve all that she did.
It was inspirational to learn of all that Michelle achieved as young woman despite the odds being against her - how she found her voice and learned to use it, not just for her and her family but for countless other young women too. I truly admire her strength, her values, her ambition and courage, and her unyielding dedication and commitment towards her husband and children.
I was genuinely fascinated by her account of her time in the White House, and deeply shocked and moved by the things she witnessed and dealt with as First Lady - the support she gave to military families, the way she hugged grieving mothers whose children were victims of evil gun crime, how she encouraged teenagers in poverty stricken areas to fight for their education.... this and so much more. She’s one helluva woman!
I’ve always liked the Obama’s but I never knew anything about them really, it was just a feeling I had. Now I’ve read this book my feelings are very much warranted and I love them even more!
I would highly recommend this book and I'm proud to have it on my beloved bookshelf.
